New Features of the PHD Virtual Backup

Posted on 01. Oct, 2010

PHD Virtual Backup is a VMWare tool download that serves as a great compliment to businesses and enterprises. The latest release provides some of the following new features:

Deploy and configure the software using a Windows-based executable file (.exe). This makes for an easy install done in a familiar style. The central GUI allows backup restoration directly from the software’s Management Appliance. You can add hosts directly to the Management Appliance by importing hosts listed in the vCenter. SSH is used by default for host communications although current users can continue to use NFS. There’s also a change block tracking feature that helps to reduce time and storage space consumption. Online help and System Pages provide useful information, including unused space, IP addresses and hostnames in addition to product support. New pages have been enhanced for the web browser, allowing for more ease of use with VMWare.

Deduplication optimization are further optimized. This incorporation helps VMWare to outperform its competitors by clearing redundant files and making room for more storage space and preventing network overconsumption.

The system requirements of VMWare have also been simplified. Only 1GB of memory needs to be allocated to each VM. 8GB of disk space is required on the ESX host partition in order for Management Appliances and True DeDupe to function properly. Both Firefox 3.0.7 and Internet Explorer 7 (or better) can be used for the web interfaces. 256MB of memory is allocated to each VBA and 3GB of storage space is required for each running VBA.

PHD Virtual continues to prove that it is the leader in providing virtualization software for large virtualization environments. Since VMWare doesn’t require any additional software or hardware in order to operate, users can focus more on the constantly improving features of VMWare. The fifth update of version 4.0 was released in August. The original release came in March 2010.

While no platform is perfect, this is indicative that PHD Virtual is able to pinpoint the known issues and correct them quickly, all while taking current features and continuing to freshen them up. Importing hosts and licenses is a great convenience, especially for new VMWare users.

VMWare’s impressive ability to downsize how much their software consumes while expanding its features is key to its impeccable success. Competitors are having trouble keeping up with the pioneer’s standard.
