Prepare For Disaster With A XenServer Backup Plan

Posted on 18. Mar, 2011

Disaster can strike at any time.  Whether it’s a catastrophic disaster such as an earthquake, or a simple server problem, when your server goes down your business can be at a standstill.  It is essential that you have a XenServer backup plan that allows you to virtually back up data. There are many benefits to this type of plan.

All companies, small or large, must have a data backup plan in place.  No matter how much we try to maintain the server, there are times when there will be failures.  It is important to be ready for these situations.  The first step is to determine the method to use for backing up the data.  Most companies favor a virtual XenServer backup plan.

A virtual backup is preferable over a local plan for several reasons.  There is a cost savings in having backups completed virtually.  The cost of an IT engineer to manage and oversee the data backup on site can be quite expensive.  Most often, local backups must be done after hours, making it an overtime situation.

Not only is this expensive, but it also takes away your IT resources from other important tasks.  You may be able to reduce your IT resources if you can backup data remotely.  Another cost savings occurs with the equipment itself.  Servers may need to be ramped up to accommodate the backups themselves.  Backups that are done locally require the use of discs.  You’ll also need to keep the discs organized and ready for use, if need be.

If a true disaster strikes, you will be able to access the data from anywhere.  For example, a natural disaster such as a tornado or an earthquake can put a quick stop to your system.  If you utilize virtual backups, you’ll be able to replicate your system wherever you set it up.  Virtual backups should be part of every business disaster recovery plan.

Of course, system outages are actually quite common.  Without a comprehensive plan in place, your business could be ruined.  You’ll need to be prepared to fix your server issues as quickly as possible and then implement the backup data.  This provides an opportunity to get back up and running with minimal down time and less disruption to your services.  The data will be ready to access at any time that you need it, night or day.  The result is a seamless recovery process and less company and customer disruption.
